A study conducted in 2013 by the UCLA found a connection between brain function and digestive system enzymes called probiotics. Probiotics are microbes that are essential for a healthy digestive system. Up until this point the results of the study were only observed in animal control groups.
So, what are Probiotics, and how do they help my digestion?
Before I get the substance of the study, I should first explain a little bit about Probiotics. They are found most heavily concentrated in our digestive system, and regulate the population of bad bacteria, thereby positively affecting our overall digestive health. The connection between the brain and probiotics, although known to exist, cannot be identified at this point. Further research will no doubt cast light on the subject in years to come.
Now, on to the results of the study. The study of a group of 36 participants showed some amazing results. Participants were divided into 3 groups. During the study, researchers had one group consume yogurt mixed with several strains of potent probiotics. Another group ate a substance that tasted and looked like yogurt, but contained no probiotics. While a third group ate nothing at all.
People participating in the study were subjected to a brain activity scan before and after the study to see how the probiotics were affecting their brains.
At the end of the study, those that were eating the probiotics were found to have a lower connectivity to the emotional center of their brain as compared to those who did not. This led to them being most likely to be less agitated and upset about certain things than the others.
The people taking the probiotics also showed a greater connectivity to the cognitive part of the brain. This meant that they were more likely to process information easier than those who had taken no probiotics.
The results go to show that although not yet fully understood, probiotics are very powerful microbes in our body. As more research is done, the true potential of these organisms will be realized and demand for quality probiotics will skyrocket.
Fun Fact ⇒ Researchers are now looking into the possibility of using probiotics to treat certain neurological conditions.
